Below are some of the more commonly asked questions about Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy.
What is Hypnosis?
There are many definitions of Hypnosis. I tend to describe it as a natural phenomena which causes an increased focus on the internal mind, rather than the external world by the process of communication with the subconscious mind. Hypnosis tends to be a very relaxing and beneficial experience for all who experience it.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is the use of Hypnotic trance to re-program the subconscious mind to remove unwanted habits or patterns. The reason for these habits or patterns are often unknown, but hypnotherapy is used to make the reasons apparent and to change them.
What is the subconscious mind?
The subconscious mind is the part of the mind that controls the body's day to day automatic activities such as breathing, walking etc.-things we do without having to think about them.As well as controlling the bodily functions, the subconscious also learns patterns of action without question. This is how habits start-The subconscious is like a computer- it accepts it's programming without question.
Can anyone be hypnotised?
Yes although the level of hypnotic trance reached can vary considerably. It should also be noted that not all people can be hypnotised by the same method. The hypnotherapist should be flexiable enough to adapt to suit the hypnotee so that the best possible trance is achieved.
Will I lose control of my actions?
No- during hypnosis, you will be totally aware of what is going on around you and what is being said to you. Your subconscious mind will only accept suggestions that are beneficial to you so anything that is against your normal morals or wishes would result in an end to the hypnotic trance.
Could I get stuck?
There is no way of getting stuck in Hypnosis. You can come out of hypnosis at any time although most people end up wanting to make the most of the relaxing feeling and choose to stay in a state of Trance for as long as possible during the session!
Could I be made to do anything I don't want to do?
No- as mentioned previously, you will only accept suggestions that your subconscious agrees will be of benefit to you. Anything else would either just be rejected by the mind or would result in you waking up.
Will I remember what happened afterwards?
There can be a certain amount of amnesia after a session of Hypnosis but most people remember almost all of the session and at time are aware of what is happening. The state can be likened to knowing what you have done during a working day, but not remembering every single little detail- only the significant ones.
Can you help me with........?
Hypnotherapy can help people with addictions, phobias, weight-loss, self-confidence, exam nerves, sports improvement, pain relief, learning, emotional well-being. In fact, almost anything.
How many sessions are required?
The number of sessions required varies depending on the person and the reason for visiting. It is impossible to say how many sessions are required, as this can only be discovered once whoever is receiving the therapy is happy with the results. This is why I do not promise a one session cure for anything. People often state that they can stop you smoking in one hour, but in my experience, a more thorough approach means less chance of the results of the therapy being temporary.
